Sclerotherapy

Scleropathy is a highly effective treatment for veins that have become enlarged, uncomfortable or unsightly. These are commonly known as spider veins or varicose veins.

Spider veins, which most women and some men have, are the result of hereditary factors and pregnancy and sometimes other causes as well. They are mostly thought of as a purely cosmetic problem, but often sufferers also often notice that their legs feel heavy, tired and restless, which is symptomatic of problems in the function of the small blue varicose veins beneath. Varicose veins affect a great proportion of the population. Not only are they a problem from a cosmetic point of view, but people with varicose veins often complain of heaviness, dragging, pain and discomfort.

Good clearance of both problems requires treatment of both sets of veins: firstly the large and then the small, as the smallest veins are often fed by the large veins. Scleropathy – direct injection of the vein – is a simple and effective treatment in most cases and no hospital treatment or time off work is required.

The procedure involves injections into unwanted veins with substances that cause the veins to become inflamed. By applying immediate pressure over the site of injections, the opposing walls of the veins are brought together, causing them to stick together and effectively closing the vein. The leg is bandaged, generally for three days, and you will need to walk for thirty minutes per day in order to assist the collapse of the poorly functioning veins. This treatment can be used to treat both varicose veins and spider veins.
